Paper-viewing Art Basel Miami with A. Moret – Day Two

3rd December 2015 by moocrew

Art Basel Miami is one of the largest celebrations of contemporary art in the world. And it’s on right now until the 6th December. Never ones to miss a party, we’ve collaborated with artist Aerosyn-Lex Mestrovic on his latest work CODICES and we’re showing it at SCOPE Miami Beach. If you’re in Miami and want to say hi, we’re in the big tent on the beach!

While we’re busy inside the tent, curator, editor (and good friend), A. Moret is spending three days on the lookout for her favourite paper artists at Art Basel Miami. Here are her faves on her second day at the event.

Eric Standley
Presented by Victori + Mo

Eric Standley, Ceres, Cut Paper, 24” x 24” x 3”, 2015

Creating intricate dimensions with detailed paper cuts, Eric Standley presents his largest work to date. Consisting of 251 sheets of paper, Ceres is an optical labyrinth and stunning presentation of precision.

Colette Robbins
Presented by Some.Time. Salon

Colette Robbins, Rorschach Totem: Apophenia, Graphite on Papier-Mache on Polymer, 15.5 x 7 x 5.3”, 2015

Inspired by Rorschach dripping ink blot, artist Colette Robins brings dimensions to life in totem sculptures. In a rigorous technique uploading ink blots into CAD renderings and finishing the sculptures with papier-mache, the artist explores phenomenon wherein one interprets meaning from meaningless patterns.

Katrina Andry
Presented by Jonathan Ferrara Gallery

Katrina Andry, The Jungle Bunny Gave You Fever. The Only Cure is to Fuck the Bunny. She Wants It. Digital Media and color woodcut reduction print on coventry linen rag, 60” x 40”, 2011

Katrina Andry presents hyperbolic scenarios often encountered by African Americans and inserts white subjects in their place, often depicted with black face or in this instance watermelon face. Andy transforms the experience of a “cat call” into an experience of great tension and disparate interaction.

Swoon
Presented by Chandran Gallery

Swoon, NeeNee, Hand printed linoleum block, hand painting on paper and found wood 41 x 48”, 2015.

Harlem based artist Caledonia Curry, also known as Swoon started the Heliotrope Foundation to transform impoverished communities, and one of their core projects focused in North Braddock, Pennsylvania. The Kickstarter project will transform the church that NeeNee is seen painting into a site of communal activity, featuring a kiln to create ceramic works and inspire the surrounding community.

Mark Hogancamp
Presented by Allouche Gallery and 1 Mile Gallery

Untitled (Dej ‘ Allaqua Montique Hogancamp!! March 20, 2009 081) Digital C-Print, 27” x 36”, 2009

Artist Mark Hogancamp creates a fictional town titled “Marwencol” set during World War II using toy dolls. The photographs are a result of the artist’s healing after a traumatic brain injury and through his staging we catch a glimpse inside of his world of the masculine, feminine and heroic.
