Behind the scenes: laser engraving at MOO
Discover the care and human craftsmanship that goes into MOO’s laser-engraved products.
There’s something very satisfying about laser-engraved merch. The way a logo catches the light on a Water Bottle. The clean, precise mark on a Twist Pen. The feeling that a product has been made with real craftsmanship and care.
At MOO, that finish comes from our in-house laser engraving process. It’s where artwork, machinery and human touch come together to turn everyday branded products into something a little more special.
Our Pre-Press Technician, Meighan Christensen, walked us through how engraving works at MOO to give you a behind-the-scenes look at how your products come to life.
What is laser engraving?

Laser engraving uses a focused beam of light to mark the surface of a product. On coated metal products like MOO Water Bottles, Twist Pens and Slim Pens, the laser removes the outer layer to reveal the metal underneath. On products like our Paper Pens, it creates a clean, precise etch that feels sharp and permanent.
It’s sometimes called “etching” because the design is created by removing the surface rather than printing on top of it. The result is crisp, high-contrast and, most importantly, made to last.
From artwork to finished product
Every engraved product begins with a customer’s unique design. Once uploaded through the MOO website, the artwork is quality checked by our Customer Design team to make sure it’s suitable for engraving. It then moves through MOO’s automated workflow system and into the etching app, ready for the operator.

Then the hands-on work begins.
The operator prepares the product, checks the laser focus and selects the right settings. Focus, speed, power and resolution all affect the final mark, so setup is everything. Then comes the engraving itself. The machine moves with controlled precision, using a combination of light and heat to create the design.
After engraving, each product is cleaned and inspected. That final stage matters as much as the first. And if it doesn’t meet MOO standards? It doesn’t pass.
“Our operators have a trained eye and a high attention to detail,” says Meighan. “They know what’s acceptable, what isn’t, and when settings need to be tweaked.”
The challenge of curved surfaces
Flat surfaces are easy. Curved products ask more from the process.
Water Bottles, in particular, can be a challenging surface to engrave because they’re not always perfectly cylindrical. Many have a slight taper, which means the surface subtly changes angle. CO2 lasers prefer flat or evenly rounded surfaces, so the team uses a tiny green level to balance the bottle and engrave on the most cylindrical area possible.

It’s the kind of detail a customer may never notice. But they’ll notice the result: a cleaner, sharper engraving that sits neatly on the product.
Pens also bring their own challenges. The engraving area is smaller, so artwork needs to be well prepared and suited to the shape of the product. A tiny shift in placement can be make or break.
Where machines meet humans
Some parts of the workflow are automated, but engraving at MOO is not a ‘set it and forget it’ process.
Customer artwork can be unpredictable, even when it meets specifications. That’s why trained operators are key. They look at the artwork, the product and the engraving result, then make adjustments where needed. Sometimes that means tweaking power, speed, or resolution. Sometimes it means spotting that a design needs extra care before it reaches production.

Quality control is also done by a human. As Meighan says, “Quality control will never be fully automated. We are passionate about upholding the MOO promise and providing the highest quality to our customers.”
What makes MOO engraving different
Before bringing engraving in-house, MOO evaluated more than a dozen equipment brands to find the best fit. The goal wasn’t just to add another production capability. It was to build a process that could deliver the consistency, quality, and premium etch customers expect from MOO.
Doing this in-house means the team can catch the little things early, before they reach the customer. That’s what makes the process feel very MOO: thoughtful, precise and built around making sure the finished product feels something to be proud of.
“Quality control will never be fully automated. We are passionate about upholding the MOO promise and providing the highest quality to our customers.”
What designs work best for engraving?
The best engraved designs tend to be clear, high-contrast, and not too crowded. Simple logos, names, messages, and line illustrations can look especially sleek.
“Sometimes it’s better to steer away from large surface areas,” says Meighan. “On bottles, you’re revealing the bare metal underneath, and the brushed nature of the metal can distract from the intended design.”

Positive and negative designs can both work beautifully, as long as there’s enough contrast and clarity for the detail to come through.
Personalized designs are a particular favorite on the manufacturing floor. Logos are important, but there’s something special about engraving that’s clearly been created for a specific person.
“I’ve always enjoyed seeing personalized gifts, rather than just logos,” says Meighan. “You know the customer thoughtfully put it together for someone special.”
The final reveal
There are plenty of satisfying parts to the process: the movement of the laser, the precision of the setup, the speed at which a product becomes customized.“The speed is one of the most surprising things,” says Meighan. “You can create something really special in just a few minutes.”
During initial product testing, the team engraved dozens of products for MOOsters while fine-tuning the process, from Water Bottles intended as gifts, to more unexpected items like an Xbox controller.
But Meighan’s favorite moment comes right at the end.

When the laser removes coating from a metal bottle, it leaves a hazy residue over the design.“The final step is wiping it away with soap and cloth,” says Meighan. “It’s a bit like clearing fog from a bathroom mirror. It goes from a cloudy mess to a crisp, reflective finish almost instantly!”
