Gifts are for quitters: why offboarding deserves better
Don’t let the goodbye be the worst bit.
You nailed the welcome for your new hire. They had a shiny new laptop, a fresh Notebook and Pen set and a welcome box waiting on their desk.
Then, three years later, they leave with nothing more than a sheet cake and a card someone panic-bought at lunch.
Bit of an anticlimax.
Brands put plenty of thought into onboarding, but not much into offboarding.
People leaving is inevitable. The relationship ending isn’t. The goodbye is a crucial part of the employee experience and it’s worth thinking about how you want people to feel when they leave.
Key takeaways
- Endings matter: the peak-end rule suggests the final moments of an experience can shape how we remember it.
- Good offboarding can pay off later. 35% of US new hires in March 2025 were returning employees.
- The best send-offs feel personal, whether that’s a thoughtful gift, shared experience, great party, or simply leaving the door open.
The psychology of a good goodbye

According to behavioral science, the ending is one of the most important parts. The peak-end rule suggests we judge an experience disproportionately by its standout moments and how it ends.
Their final day is crucial.
That doesn’t mean a nice Tumbler can undo three years of terrible management. But when someone is leaving on good terms, the ending is one more way to make your appreciation tangible.
The boomerang opportunity
There’s another reason not to slam the door behind them. They might genuinely come back.
Boomerang employees made up 35% of US new hires in March 2025. In the information sector, nearly two-thirds of new hires were returning employees.
Some brands are already treating former employees as a talent pool. Salesforce, for example, invites former employees to join its Alumni Talent Community and keep up with open roles. It has even put returning employees behind the mic for its Boomerang Spotlight podcast, sharing the stories of people who found their way back.
A good goodbye won’t guarantee they come back. But a bad one might guarantee they don’t.
Seven better ways to say goodbye
The best send-off isn’t necessarily the most expensive one. It’s the one that feels like someone actually thought about it.
So mix and match. Go big. Go sentimental. Get slightly ridiculous. Just maybe don’t make their final memory of the company a sad card circulating around the office.
1. Give them something for their next chapter

A beautiful custom Notebook and premium Pen are both useful and meaningful. Add a handwritten message inside the cover to make it more personal than standard corporate merch.
2. Take them somewhere
Book a nice dinner. Go to the baseball game. Do karaoke badly. Head to the bar they’ve been talking about for three years but somehow never visited.
Experiences give people something merchandise can’t: one last shared memory with the team.
3. Throw a good leaving party
And by that we don’t mean a bottle of lukewarm prosecco.
Make the send-off party feel special. Pick their favorite food. Make a playlist. Put some money behind the bar. Invite the entire team. Show them that their contribution is worth celebrating.
4. Make the inside joke physical
Maybe it’s a disastrous presentation or the typo that entered company folklore. Turn it into a Die Cut Sticker or print it on a Postcard. A little piece of team lore they can take with them.
5. Gift their actual interests

A goodbye gift doesn’t have to remind someone of their job.
Know they’re obsessed with cooking? Book a class. Love movies? Get them a cinema membership. Running their first marathon? Put something toward the entry fee. Moving cities? Give them a gift card for a brilliant local restaurant.
6. Make the team card worth keeping
No one wants a card that reads something like, “Good luck! Dave x”
Instead, make it personal. Create a custom card and ask people to write something specific, like a favorite memory or something they learned from them. Suddenly a standard leaving card becomes a tiny archive of their time there.
7. Leave the door open

Possibly the most valuable leaving gift costs nothing. Tell good people you’d genuinely like to work with them again. Keep them in the alumni Slack. Invite them to company events. Check in occasionally. Send opportunities their way. Because you never know when they’ll be back.
