The first impression economy

Twenty years, 2.6 billion cards, and one small rectangle we still love reinventing.

20 years ago, swapping contact details usually meant handing someone a Business Card.

Today, you can AirDrop them, add them on LinkedIn, scan a QR code or find them online before they’ve even finished saying their surname.

And yet, MOO has printed 2.6 billion Business Cards. 150 million in 2025 alone.

So why has this tiny rectangle survived the smartphone?

After two decades of printing them, we’ve learned what makes a first impression stick.

Here’s what billions of Business Cards can tell us about why they still work.

Key takeaways

  • 2.6 billion Business Cards later, the physical introduction is still going strong.
  • Business Cards make an introduction feel more personal and intentional.
  • Design details like finish, color, and typography can help a brand stand out before a word is spoken.
  • Weight, texture, and finish can say a lot before anyone reads a word.
  • Material choice can say something about what a brand values.
  • Even in a digital-first world, there’s still something powerful about handing someone something real.

A small object with a social job

A Business Card does more than transfer information. It turns an introduction into something physical. A first glimpse of your taste, your attention to detail, and the way you want your brand to be remembered. When everything else is one tap away, handing someone something tangible can make the moment feel a little more intentional.

And when everyone’s competing for a sliver of attention, having something physical to hand over still counts for a lot. Someone flips it over, spots the finish, asks about the design, and before you know it, that stranger has just become a connection.

A first impression you can hold

Before someone visits your website or scrolls through your portfolio, a Business Card can already tell them quite a lot.

One customer put it neatly: “My business cards speak volumes about my brand before I speak a word.”

That’s because the card itself is part of the message. The typography, color, paper, and finish can all say something about whether your brand is playful, polished, understated, or very serious about shiny things.

The tiny details doing big brand work

On something this small, details get noticed.

Over the years, Special Finishes have given brands more ways to play with light, texture and contrast, from Gold Foil and Silver Foil to Spot Gloss and Raised Spot Gloss.

MOO customer Kate described her Gold Foil cards as “little rays of sunshine in my hand”, with detailing that “catches the eye and makes a statement.”

A flash of foil or raised detail can create a tiny pause, something that makes the card feel worth looking at rather than filing away immediately. When your card is one of ten handed over at an event, that second look can be the difference between blending in and being remembered.

378 million MOO cards have featured a Special Finish, including 75 million in Gold or Silver Foil.

A weighty first impression

In 2012, MOO worked with Mohawk to launch Luxe Business Cards, made from four layers of Mohawk Superfine paper with a colored seam running through the middle.

One customer described their weight as “the equivalent heft of a Teddy Roosevelt handshake.”

Weight has a way of making things feel serious. A heavier card feels more substantial, more considered, and harder to dismiss. It’s a small physical cue that says: we mean business.

Quality you can feel

Business Cards move directly from one hand to another, so how they feel matters.

Values you can hand over

What goes into a Business Card has changed too. In 2017, we launched our first tree-free Cotton Business Cards. Originally made using discarded T-shirt offcuts, today they use cotton linters, the soft fibers around the seed.

They’re proof that a more considered material can still look and feel seriously premium. Giving recycled materials a new lease of life shows that you see value where the rest of the industry sees waste, right down to the paper you print on.
