Great design for everyone: Lawrence Slater

Helping businesses look their best, one flyer at a time.

Hare of the cat blog hero

For Lawrence Slater, great design isn’t about fancy techniques or big budgets—it’s about making an impact. Whether he’s working on a high-profile campaign for a global brand like Converse or redesigning a Flyer for a local cat groomer, his goal is the same: to help businesses stand out and connect with their audience.

Trends may shift quickly, but one principle remains: good design makes a difference. Lawrence is committed to helping businesses look their best—no matter their size or budget.

Helping businesses look good

Walk through any neighbourhood, and you’ll likely spot flyers and signs with confusing layouts, poor use of graphic design principles, and a general lack of clarity. Lawrence saw this as an opportunity. Inspired by illustrator Max Kolo, known for redesigning ads in New York City, Lawrence brought this idea to London. But there’s a twist. Instead of just redesigning the flyers, he contacts business owners and offers the reworked version for future use.

“I feels good to give back to my local community and help my neighbours with something that is second nature to me but may be harder for other people,” Lawrence says. “It’s also great to start conversations with people local to me that I wouldn’t normally have much interaction with. Local businesses are part of the fabric of the community—it’s nice to give back with the skills I’ve gained over the last 10 years.”

The creative process

Lawrence’s creative process always starts with paper. He carries a small notebook to sketch layouts and develop ideas, focusing on how images and text interact and support each other.

“I always try to combine the type and the image,” Lawrence explains. “I want them to play off each other and feel cohesive. It’s about making sure that every element supports the message and enhances the overall design.”

Why print

Lawrence continues to champion the power of print. He believes that physical materials—like Flyers and Postcards-still play a crucial role in local businesses’ success.

“Print is one of the easiest and simplest ways for a small business to get their message out there in a local area,” Lawrence explains. “It’s also a nice way to brighten up local noticeboards and make the neighbourhood a little more vibrant.”

The real beauty of print is its ability to communicate quickly and effectively to the people closest to you. Whether it’s a flyer for a local cleaner or a poster for a neighbourhood event, print allows businesses to reach their community with a tangible presence.

The impact of good design

At its core, good design is about communication. It’s about creating something that speaks to the audience and makes an impression. Lawrence’s work, whether on a global campaign or a local flyer, is driven by this belief. By combining his skills in art direction, graphic design, and illustration, Lawrence helps businesses of all sizes look their best. Explore more of his work here
