For anyone who doesn’t know, a hack day is where people with ideas get together to make cool stuff – some are freeform, some are themed around government, music or society. Ours, of course was MOO-related!
We decided to ease ourselves into it by just inviting the MOO Crew this time round, but keep checking back here for more details on days that will be open to everyone – we’ve been hearing how keen some of you are to work on our API and we want to get together with you too, so stay tuned.
First off was an amazing presentation on the powers of HTML5 from Hannah – an inspiring start to the day, which turned out to form the basis of one of the hacks. Well – okay, you know us too well – actually first off was a delicious croissanty breakfast from a local bakery!
Fitting an entire hack day into work hours meant that each group only had seven hours to produce a finished hack, and we were super impressed with the creativity and level of polish everyone managed to apply in such a short time.

Hacks ranged from ideas & prototypes for new features,

MiniCard haute couture,

and some beautiful new ways of looking at the data you, our lovely users, produce.
We asked Lisa, our VP of Product & Marketing, Kate, Head of Product and Dan, Head of Customer Services to each choose a personal favourite, and then decide on one overall winner together.

Judging from the animated discussion while they were tucked away in a meeting room, they had as hard a time deciding as we all did – because each attendee also got to vote for a Hacker’s Choice award.
So with no further ado, congratulations to all our winners:
Roly’s Data Dashboard – a page that looked like the world viewed from space, with lights representing users on moo.com
Marc with his MOOsaic cards – an app that takes Flickr photos of a particular colour, resizes them and makes them into a different image – Marc demoed the MOO logo!
Jyoti & Aneyma showed us a new automated test regression suite – something that’s sure to save the tech team lots of time.
Even the US participated, with Dave, Justin, Zac, Sandi & Shelley Skyping in to give us ‘Where’s my stuff?’, a new customer service idea.
And last but by no means least, Tamsin’s construction project, which needs no explanation…

Looks like a fun day :-)
and considering your effervescently creative products, I imagine that is just about right
Brilliant! I love my moo cards and love ideas and collaboration (the more random the better!)
I’ll keep my eyes peeled for the next Hack Day (yes, that is a hint for an invite)
Keep up the good work ;O)
OMG how did I not know this was happening? I always go to hack days! I have got to know if there is another one!!!
Love this idea of a hack day ! Thanks for sharing this with us all :)
Can’t help but wonder why the Mini-Card dress is shown only in Black & White ?
And, nope, not suggesting a conspiracy – just honestly curious. :)
Blessings !
Sounds like most excellent fun! I love that Moo card dress, it’s amazing :)
@Sufian This time it was an internal Hack Day only. We will definitely be opening up the MOO Studios for a community Hack Day in the near future.
