All of us back at MOO Studios were very impressed with Jack’s cards and excited to find out that Jack had made his cards with MOO. So, we asked San Sharma* to find out a bit more about Jack and the story behind his cards for our business ideas section.
We couldn’t wait for Jack’s story to go live in our ideas section so we’ve shared it as a sneak peak here on our blog. Here’s what San discovered…
Jack Hooker is a freelance graphic designer, working from a social collaborative space in
Lewes, East Sussex. Co-working, he says, gives him the chance to meet other creative professionals - and with his MOO Business Cards he makes sure that everybody knows Jack!
Jack uploaded complete designs for the front and back of his MOO Business Cards in four variations based on illustrations of himself - as the Jack in a pack of playing cards.
As a freelancer, Jack is used to appearing in different guises. He works for a number of design agencies and private clients, on projects as diverse as packaging, print and promotions. He also designs for newmedia, creating sites for bands and brands.
In fact, Jack got the idea for his business cards at The Farm, where he found that many people were already using MOO for themselves. “I saw that you could have different designs on the back of each card,” he said. “So, I emailed MOO to see if my idea was do-able and they replied, explaining how to use the PDF uploader on their website. It was easy!”
Jack then used a corner cutter to round the edges off his Business Cards so that they looked more like playing cards. “The response I’ve had from the cards has been great,” he said. “If I give one out at an event, I often get two or three more people asking if they can have one too!”
The cards are a perfect way to show off Jack’s creativity, as a master of his trade, without breaking the bank. “They’re very affordable,” Jack says. “And MOO offers small print runs too - perfect for trying out new ideas to see how they’ll look, and what kind of response they’ll get.” And, as a conversation piece, they’re an ideal ice-breaker, especially if you’re a nervous networker!
Jack played his cards right by using MOO. As a freelancer, first impressions are everything, and with these cards, Jack’s always sure to have a winning hand.

Wow, brilliant cards. I’m very impressed!
Clever!
I happen to have a corner cutter, so I tried this out with one of my spare minicards… feels slippery in my hand and looks even smaller than usual.
I think this may be an idea better left to the business card sizes. It’s not much taken off, but the difference a corner makes!
Rounder corners rock. Those cards just take your breath away, that’s what you need when handing them out, to be DIFFERENT.

Super-fly cards Jack *applause* really nice
If moo decide to go ahead and offer rounded corners I would like the option of choosing maybe one or two corners left square, with the rest rounded. If using a die-cut this may be difficult, but if using a corner cutter it would be achievable, but time consuming.
How about us specifying the radius of the corner, would that be possible? That could open a whole world of possibilities!
Maybe you should go the whole hog and offer custom die-cuts like printing.com does (I don’t like them very much…) then I’d use you all the time!
Love the cards and I hope Moo reads this - please offer rounded corners. I love your cards but it is time consuming for many to round corners themselves. Your sales will definitely increase, I can assure you that!
I have believe it or not gotten stopped and ask for a job for hire when not even looking for work off my Moo order the very first one. I was asking about a backdrop and left my card for a call back and the person dropped what he was doing to come after me… So yes first impressions work..!

What a difference a card makes! Most people remember me for my cards now, & if rounded corners were offered (fantastic idea), why not add die cut shapes within the card as well…..
I think it would be great if Moo would offer the option of round corners to its buissness-cards. Real playing card sets could be made.
I know many photographers are using Moo - so If I could have rounded corners it would make me stand out - till everyone had them
Nice cards, I wanted rounded corners for a recent batch I just printed with Moo. Would definitely love to have option for rounded corners in the future please.

I second Martin Willis’ thought to be able to CHOOSE corners to have rounded. That would be fantastic.

I third Martin Willis’ suggestion. Moo cards are already a clear winner for users, so by making them stand out a little (no make that a great deal) more will help users make more connections!
Add rounded corners and I’ll be amongst the first to order them!
I would love to be able to offer my customers REAL (std sized) playing cards with custom photos inserted within a playing card template. This would be “classic MOO”! Adding rounded corners would make it a Royal Flush! GO, MOO, GO!
@Laurent - if you google for ’rounded corner punch’ you should come up with stationery or scrapbook suppliers that can sell you punch in a country near you. (Like these for example - not used this company before, but they’re the kind of things you’re after).
I LOVELOVELOVE rounded corners. I saw them on another site but didn’t like the choices nor the price. So I gave up. Then I found moo.com even though no rounded corners, far better choices!
I agree with an above comment…people could make whole packs of playing cards. What a great idea for a travel sized deck of playing cards on mini-cards! That would be great for long car trips!

Rounded corners would be so much less likely to get dog-eared. Dog ears are nice on dogs, but not so much on business cards.

We LOVE rounded corners and have them on all our business cards. But interestingly, we learned (the hard way) that the Asian culture considers rounded corners “feminine” and thus we had to re-print biz cards for our Asian board members with square borders, as not to offend. Something to keep in mind if you do business globally…

just to chime in again.. I think The Moo cards are looking LIKE what I will be using for my senior 411 cards so ROUNDED corners would be super nice..
to the people commenting about actual playing cards. there is a guy in canada (i think) who does just that. my dad just got a pack made for my grandparents’ 50th anniversary. he had their pics for the king and queen of hearts. i’m sure he just googled the idea and found the site. i’ll ask him and post it though
