The Business Cards of the Future – NFC

27th September 2012 by Martin

Since MOO started in 2006, we’ve been focused on the idea of revolutionizing the Business Card. We’ve always aimed to upset the existing order within print – to do new things, think in exciting ways, and to go where no man has gone before. **ahem**

Six years later those aims haven’t changed. We still want to upset the order, and we still want to make people gasp – in a good way, and we still want to meet a Klingon. As a consequence, a small group here at MOO HQ has been secretly working on some exciting new things that we hope will help to define the way that we all exchange personal information in the future. Whilst we’re not ready to start selling this yet, we are getting closer and we’re letting you all in on the secret.

NFC Business Cards

Starting today, any pack of Business Cards you buy from MOO will come with a little extra – a free NFC enabled Business Card.

“A what??” you say? In short, an NFC enabled Business Card is a regular Business Card, with a tiny microchip and antenna embedded inside the paper that can transmit data from itself to a mobile phone which is also NFC ready, when they are tapped together.

It probably all sounds a bit mysterious, so we’ve put together a page that will give you the lowdown on what NFC technology is, and how it works. We think it’s really exciting, and we hope you will too.

We’re giving away 150,000 so order your next set of MOO Business Cards quickly and feel free to experiment with your free card. We have written some data to them but the chips can be rewritten. Soon we’ll be releasing an app for Android which will allow you to update what your card does.

In the meantime, we’re going to ask for your help. We are constantly amazed about what you, our community, do with MOO products. Some of the things that you do with our products make us giggle, gasp and frankly, be a bit jealous of. And in the spirit of “none of us are as good as all of us” we’re going to ask for your help. We’d love to know how you’d like to use a pack of NFC enabled Business Cards, should they be available.

NFC Phone

As is now probably pretty clear, we’re dabbling with the technology and whilst we think we have the actual technology pretty well understood, we’re sure there are plenty of exciting and creative things that you can actually DO with them that we haven’t thought of.

So, if you have any burning bright ideas, whether prosaic or “out-there” about what you’d like to do with a pack of NFC Business Cards. Please do let us know in the comments. For all you Tweeters out there, you can also use #MOOThirdSide. You never know, you may find your ideas included in the next installment of NFC products that we release!

I would like a card that automatically puts my telephone# and my email address on it. Please. I would love that to happen.

P.S. I just tested the glossy card and I’m in love with it. When the first order came in, I immediately made a second order. Unfortunately I have 100 different pictures that show my one of a kind jewelry. Eventually I will get around to color coding the cards and each pack will contain 50 cards of a specific type of jewelry (i.e.a ring pack, a necklace pack, earrings, etc. I’m in love with MOO.

We have been using the NFC card and the NFC app to direct people to our program’s website. They work great when people have a NFC enabled phone AND they know how to use it. Not so great when dealing with blackberry-driven government folks.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about business cards.

This design is wicked! You most certainly know how to keep a
reader entertained. Between your wit and your videos, I was almost moved to start
my own blog (well, almost…HaHa!) Excellent
job. I really loved what you had to say, and more than that,
how you presented it. Too cool!

Until they arrive – use a QR code generator.

Is this ever going to actually happen? It’s a shame nothing has come of it over two years later.
