These comic creations are perfectly horrible, but it's OK, they're supposed to be. It's as if the classic cartoons of the '30s and '40s had contracted some unpleasant diseases - boils of the scalp, a flesh-eating virus, zip-neck - but remained impervious to harm and as chipper as ever.
