Meet the judges: Brendan Stephens, Creative Director Zipcar

We can’t resist a competition; it gives us the chance to discover the exciting businesses our customers are building, and we get to give something back, too. (Did we mention some amazing MOO Awards prizes?) So it really is thrilling to see loads of great entries to this year’s MOO Awards from both new comers and returning applicants from 2012. The entries are mounting up, and our judging panel is eager to receive the shortlist. But before we let them loose on your applications, we wanted to find out a little more about them…

So which of our five judges have we put in the hot seat this week? It’s Zipcar’s Creative Director Brendan Stephens.

Brendan Stephens

Zipcar (as you may or may not know) is a brilliantly simple idea – cars on demand – turned into a leading business in short term transport solutions, and a sustainable one at that.

Brendan joined Zipcar in 2011, after an impressive career in art directing all types of business, from publishing to personal shopping. He’s a big advocate of maintaining a strong brand identity, which must be why we get along so well.

How and when did you first discover MOO?

My former boss left Zipcar (sob!) to go work for MOO. At the same time coincidentally, we were moving our headquarters and looking to redo our business system. Knowing what MOO was capable of, I wanted to jump on their bandwagon and put wonderful designs on wonderful cards, all beautifully packaged.

Why have you accepted to be a judge in this year’s awards?

Who would turn down such an honour? I like that the awards focus on innovation, a word overused today, but necessary in companies (10 or fewer employees) that MOO is looking to showcase in the awards. It feels genuine to me that MOO wants to promote small businesses. Plus, after seeing the great stuff that was submitted last year, I wanted to get a sneak peek at the fantastic work being submitted this year.

Which companies or people are you most inspired by?

Zipcar of course! I’m inspired by any company or person that stays true to their brand. I’m inspired by being wowed. I’m inspired by being inspired.

What do you think you’d be doing if you weren’t doing what you do now?

Having a cocktail on a beach. Other than that, anything design related is what gets me going – interiors, landscape, product.

What’s the first thing you’re going to do when you’re done answering these questions?

Answer more questions that won’t be as much fun as these, I’m sure!

So there you have it – great design is a plus when it comes to what Brendan’s looking for in a MOO Award winner. And we’re confident he’ll find more than he can handle in your entries.

    I can relate to the cocktail on the beach answer to that question. Design is my daily love but I too am a beach bum at heart.
