ColaLife – One year on…

11th September 2013 by Andrea

In 2012 we launched the inaugural MOO Award as a way of celebrating our truly remarkable customers. We wanted to reward small businesses for their imagination and ability to overcome adversity in the all-important early stages of a running a business. We received so many entries it really was difficult to pick a winner, but affter much deliberation we managed to pick two who absolutely epitomised what the MOO award stood for.

Now, as we kick off the 2013 MOO Awards (that’s right – multiple awards – we’ve expanded the categories!), we catch up with last year’s winners to see what they’ve been up to…

Simon Berry – ColaLife

It’s been a pretty amazing year for Simon Berry at ColaLife. His charity helps prevent diarrhoea and dysentery in Africa via ingenious home-use products. They also have a constantly evolving model of distribution allowing them to deliver to distant yet needy rural areas. We learned all about the “Kit Yamoyo” last year when Simon and his wife Jane came to MOO HQ to collect their award. We were absolutely fascinated to hear their story and see them present their remarkable project.

ColaLife’s concept grew from the question, “If Coca Cola can be ubiquitous in developing countries, why can’t essential medicines?” Using the same principles and networks as large commodity producers, ColaLife strives to give their lifesaving products the same degree of pervasiveness.

So what else have they been up to? They’ve launched the ColaLife Operational Trial in Zambia, improved the design of their product, recruited and trained their first 100 retailers in Zambia (equipping them each with MOO ID cards) and engaged global stakeholders. More congratulations are in order, too; “Kit Yamoyo” won Product Design of the Year 2013. On top of all that, they’ve somehow found time to film The Cola Road documentary!

Thankfully, despite ColaLife’s busy schedule, Simon will be joining us as a judge for this year’s MOO Awards. His advice for submitting your entry to this year’s awards? “Don’t think about it too much. Just do it. Your passion for what you do will come across.”

This year, we’re giving away over £20,000 / $35,000 to the most inspiring and unique MOO customers in the 2013 MOO Awards! Could you be one of this year’s winners?
