A couple of weeks ago, there was much celebration of a big day for the Development team here at MOO HQ; we reached the release day of our 100th Sprint. “100th Sprint, what on earth is that?” I hear you ask. Apart from being an online printing company do you also happen to participate in competitive athletics? No, unfortunately not. In the software development method we follow, a Sprint is the basic unit of development. The method is called agile development (ours is called Scrum), which consists of Sprints. The Sprints iteratively and incrementally help us build more and more of the remarkable products and features that in turn help you, the customers of MOO, give life to your remarkable ideas.
The developers at MOO live and breathe the Sprint cycle. Each Sprint lasts for two weeks. Tasks are distributed by our friendly neighbourhood Product Managers at the start of the Sprint, we go back to our caves and type away lines upon lines of code that make up the website and services. It is in fact a rather luxurious cave with lots of cake, a foosball table and the occasional beer.
Once the cake is all eaten up, the foosball scores are tallied (and the code has been finalized, obviously) it’s testing time. Our priority here is to ensure that customers won’t have any problems using it. This process lasts for three days, and after that, finally; new features for you to use turn up on the website!
This process is like laying a house brick by brick. Sprints help us have clear checkpoints, where we can unload our minds of the previous work, take a big breath, look back with satisfaction and set forward for the new finish line that lies ahead.
And so, with the steadiness of Aesop’s Tortoise and the speed of the Hare, (which makes a bit of weird looking hybrid-creature) we’ve reached this momentous milestone in the journey, which we celebrated in true MOO style – with beer and pizza, of course!
