Sometimes a summer internship isn’t just another job. Initially, I wasn’t too sure about becoming a marketing intern at moo.com. For the last two years, I’ve been studying Furniture Design at RISD and wasn’t too eager about swapping a machine room for an office for three months.
However, during my first week I knew that I made the right choice. I soon learned that marketing isn’t just about data analysis or catchy slogans, but it’s really about communication. Communicating what you have to offer to those who potentially want it. Without marketing, a business would have no unique identity, nothing new to present. In the last two years, I’ve learned that designing and creating a piece of furniture is all about communicating material and function well. MOO is doing the same thing, but in a different medium – business cards. In a market so saturated with a product that could be so dull, moo’s cards stand out. It really felt connected. The parallels I saw were enough to make me want to learn more. And luckily enough, I seemed to be in the best place to do just that. If want to design furniture and possibly one day run my own business, I’ll be able to speak to the greater audience by marketing myself effectively with the skills I’ve learned at MOO.
Plus, the hands-on part of me was satisfied: I got to help set up the office furniture for the new workplace, and spent a few days in the warehouse, learning all about the MOO brand first hand. I got to see the big printer (Big MOO) do its thing, learned how our products were sorted, packaged and sent, and even got to cut a few batches of business cards myself.
And the best part was, even though they communicate so well with a larger market, they remain close enough to make even the new kid feel like part of the MOO family. Throughout the internship, I loved working with everyone here at MOO and I’ll miss the daily exploits that made being here worthwhile.
Yay!
We loved having you, Ben! You were a great addition to our MOO team! Good luck in what is sure to be a bright and shining future!
