The MOO Blog

A speedy four year retrospective

1st September 2010 by Denise

It’s almost four years since we launched moo.com In some ways so much has happened – more products, more people, certainly more experience… In other ways not much has changed at all. We still ‘love to print’, we still get excited to see your photos of products out there in the wild, and we’re still trying to make the best products we possibly can.

What with the recent makeover and the promise of more things to come, we thought now could be an interesting time to take a quick look at what came before. What MOO used to be like – y’know, in the old days.

Old MOO

When we started, we just had one product: The MiniCard. The site was pretty simple. We sold MiniCards and you could either make some, or… well, or not, really. We launched with Flickr on September 14th – you can tell we were exhausted, from the url of the big announcement!

The team cheered each order as it went through, keeping fingers crossed that nothing would go wrong. Much time was spent ‘elfing’ as we now call it, as everyone from the dev team to the CEO were packing orders. (Which makes it sound like a huge number of people, but there were only nine of us at the time).

We added another product next, but managed to squeeze that in to the early layout, squishing two products across the top of the site, rather than one…

MOO two

A bit later on, we launched StickerBooks and announced – wait for it – a cart! Yes, we’d managed without a cart or basket, until the crazy hazy days of October 2007.

You’ll see by this point we’d introduced our designers too, giving you the option to choose artwork from professional designers or illustrators for those occasions you didn’t think your own snaps were up to scratch.

MOO three

We stuck with this style of design for quite a while, launching Postcards and Greeting Cards too.

MOO four!

As things progressed, we decided we needed a more flexible homepage – and so we launched a design you’re probably more familiar with. This design saw us through the launch of Business Cards, (not to mention Mighty Cards) and the opening of an American store… We also added more functionality, things like photo enhancement, and user accounts, and PDF uploads.

Which more or less brings us up to where we are today, a refreshed MOO.

It’s been a fun four years. New products, new faces – here and across the pond – and so much more planned for the future. Thanks for being part of everything that’s come so far, and as they say ‘don’t be a stranger’. We love hearing from you, finding out what you think, what you need, and how we can improve.

Four years down? Here’s to the next 40!

It is really four years since I first ordered? My time flies. I still love your product (I only ever still buy mini cards) and every non-geek I give them too is fascinated. Even today the accountant marvelled at the finish and opened his draw to show 5000 normal business cards, 99% of which he think’s he’ll recycle. More boxes of 100 only please!

  7. Danika:

Happy birthday Moo! Hope you’re celebrating the right way – with LOTS of cake!!

If possible, I would like to have a template with printing borders (I don’t know how to call them in English) and so on to start designing with, of course in open SVG format. :)
    Keep on the great work!
