A lesson on Seniors’ Portrait Cards – getting wise to the student market

7th April 2010 by Fiona

For freelance creatives, pinpointing business opportunities in new or less obvious areas can make the difference between a stable, potentially stagnant career and a dynamic, ever-expanding one. Freelance photographer, Amy Neubauer, has recently started to broaden her portfolio of services to meet the growing demand for ‘Senior Cards’ – portraits of pupils in schools and colleges throughout the US.

Particularly popular with high school students, Senior Portraits for the college year book have emerged as a thriving industry for professional photographers. Once captured for posterity, students order packages of their pictures, comprising 8×10, 5×7 and wallet-sized (2.5×3.5) mini prints. The wallet-sized cards are then handed out to fellow students at the end of high school or to coincide with graduation.

Lots of photographers use MOO to transform the mini-prints into personalised Senior Card wallets for clients, featuring contact details of each student and/or graduation open house information, alongside the individual portrait photographs.

We love the examples we’ve seen so far and, according to everything we’ve read, so do the students. In fact, the cards are starting to become the ultimate graduate accessory.

Inspired by Amy’s innovative approach, we’ve rustled up a few more suggestions on how MOO can help further enhance Student Portrait Packages offered by fellow photographers.
(We also like to think these ideas can be adapted by any freelance creative looking for ways of offering more to clients, so take a look as see what you can use).

Why not try…

  • filling a Mosaic Frame with MiniCards each showing photos of different students for groups of friends to order as keepsakes.

    • using MOO’s high-quality packaging really finishes-off each set of wallet-sized Senior Cards, replacing the standard plastic zip-lock bags with our sharp and sturdy boxes or range of stylish card holders.

    • suggesting the addition of a quote from friends onto each Senior Card printed on a MOO Business Card to truly personalise your offering.
    • creating StickerBooks using photographs of the entire class of students (order from the European store for worldwide delivery!)
    • printing the traditional 4×6 print onto sets of Postcards for durability and extra impact.
    • designing personalised photographic Greeting Cards for students to send out as ‘Thank You!’ notes for graduation gifts.

Well, Amy’s approach, foresight and inventiveness certainly get top marks from us. Thanks for teaching us more about the subject of Senior Cards, Amy. See you at graduation!
