Word up! Top tip for primary school teachers

13th September 2007 by Denise

Stefanie, a pre-service primary school teacher has come up with a great use for MiniCards. A LiveJournal user, she’s used the Text MiniCard option to make a a set of cards featuring the most commonly used words in the English language.

Each of the cards in the 100 pack has a different word, clearly written on a plain, but colourful background. She plans to use them as flash cards or prompt cards, and perhaps make a set of nouns or adjectives next.

We love this idea! (Actually we made a less educational version ourselves a while ago, and attached magnets to the back, for use as fridge poetry.)

If you’re not a LiveJournal user, but you’d still like to make some Text MiniCards, I’ll let you into a secret. Head over to moo.com/livejournal and hit the ‘Make Text MiniCards’ button. When it asks you to enter your LiveJournal user name, do what MOO do. Enter: moocards

You’ll then be through to the next stage, where you can make your cards. When it comes to payment and shipping details, add your own info, and away you go. Your own set of Text Cards.

Now, how you decide what the 100 most commonly used words are is another thing entirely. I guess that might depend on who you are :)

Oddly if you used a reference of the 100 most commonly used words in English language, you’d have a pretty boring set of mostly articles, prepositions, and pronouns.

Gotta pass on a bunch of those grammatical objects and throw in some verbs and nouns instead.

  2. Stefanie:

@Patrick – very good point, although the reason for the choice of the 100 most common words is that they’re usually the first set of words that young children in school (P-2) will use in their writing – the basic building blocks if you will. :D Hence the reason for wanting to create addition sets with a larger variety of words. :D
